Crystal Space is a mature, full-featured software development kit (SDK) providing real-time 3D graphics for applications such as games and virtual reality. It is free (LGPL) and cross-platform (Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X).
The project encompasses two main components:
| Crystal Space — A modular, configurable, and extensible rendering engine supporting OpenGL and advanced features such as shaders and lighting systems, physics, 3D sounds, animation blending, foliage, terrain, virtual file system, physical peripherals, and more. | |
| CEL — Entity system supporting higher-level functionality, such as runtime package environment (CELstart), generic event system, avatar and camera management, artificial intelligence (path finding, steering behaviors, neural networks and genetic algorithms), vehicles, and more. |
Related projects: YoFrankie!, PlaneShift, Blender (blender2crystal), CrystalArchitect, Peragro Tempus.

Yesterday was the last official day of the Google Summer of Code 2010.
This year GSOC was really interesting for Crystal Space. Six different projects were funded and all of them leads to really interesting and promising features that will be really useful in the future of Crystal Space.
Here is the list of the students blogs. You can find there some information and some videos on what has been realized:
- Joseph Forte with deferred shading plugin
- Eduardo Poyart with automated progressive LOD generation and management
- Alexandru-Teodor Voicu with real time hair simulation and rendering
- Claudiu Mihail with new improved hardware augmented culler
- Mohit Taneja with advanced lighting for lighter2
- Leonardo Domingues with integration of Recast & Detour into CEL and hierarchical pathfinding
Congratulations to all the students of this GSOC for the quality of their work! - 11:19, 7 May 2010: GSoC 2010 Projects
The Google Summer of Code 2010 students for Crystal Space have been chosen.
We are happy to have got six slots this year which is the most we've ever got so far. Here is the list of accepted projects:

Congratulations to all those students! - 07:29, 19 March 2010: GSoC 2010
For the fifth time in a row Crystal Space was accepted for Google Summer of Code 2010! We are very happy with this and we hope to give a number of students an enjoyable experience with Crystal Space and also give Crystal Space a nice feature boost.
If you are a student and interested in working on Crystal Space for Google Summer of Code then make sure to visit our SoC page and especially the list of ideas. On Monday, March 29 at 19:00 UTC Google will start accepting student applications but in the mean time feel free to join us in the #CrystalSpace irc room (irc.freenode.net) or at our development mailing list and discuss your project ideas in advance. It is also worthwhile to make yourselves comfortable with Crystal Space code (version 1.9).
